A statement of intent – Aston Villa signing this 31-goal African star would be a masterstroke by Dean Smith

Why Mbaye Diagne would be a statement signing for Aston Villa

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are interested in signing Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne.

Mbaye Diagne, 27, scored 31 goals for Kasimpasa and Galatasaray combined last season. He scored 20 goals in 17 appearances for Kasimpasa before signing for Turkish rivals Galatasaray. The striker represented Senegal at the AFCON and played in the Europa League last season.

The Senegalese has been prolific in the Turkish Super League for the past two seasons and deserves a shot in the Premier League. Aston Villa are right to consider him and they must quickly wrap up the deal before Thursday’s deadline.

The Villans have been on a remarkable spending spree following their promotion to the Premier League, via play-offs. They released nine players after the end of last season which gave left them with no other alternative but to take a dip in the transfer market and find replacements.

If Dean Smith can get a couple of deals done, it would seal a stunning transfer window for Aston Villa and one of the most incredible summers the club has ever seen.

Whilst Dean Smith would be happy with the squad he has at his disposal, Mbaye Diagne is needed because the Villans need depth in the striker department. Villa have already signed Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge, a Brazilian striker who is renowned for his pace and power.

Similarly, Diagne is a pacey and strong striker noted for his lethal finishing skills and link-up play. He will certainly add the necessary depth and quality to Villa’s attack.

The Senegalese might need time to adapt to the new league but he has the tools to succeed in the Premier League and would offer Smith’s side with a big presence in and around the box, that more creative players like Jota and Jack Grealish can play off of.

The former Tianjin Teda man uses his footballing intelligence to good effect- losing his marker and outsmarting the defenders with his clever movement in and around the penalty area. Add to that his aerial prowess and ice-cool finishing skills, Diagne has the potential to be an excellent addition to Villa’s attack.

All in all, the Senegal international could potentially form a deadly partnership with Moraes, making Villa’s attack an absolute nightmare to deal with for Premier League defences.

Verdict

To conclude, signing Diagne would be a massive statement of intent from Aston Villa, and a move that reflects their ambitions in the upcoming season to come.
