A Tribute To The Underrated Maestro Steven Pienaar

Steven Pienaar, the South African born maestro, has always been flying under the radar in-spite of all the obvious talent we all know that he has. He is indeed the perfect example of feistiness and spirit which is so lacking in modern football nowadays. While players much less talented are chasing after money and fame and off course the bigger club here is a perfect example of a professional who is just bothered about the football aspect and nothing else.

If we have a look at his career he was always a talent right down from his childhood days. His pace and guile right from the offset saw him offered a place at the Ajax youth academy. He repaid the Dutch giants Ajax for this faith with by helping them to two League Championships before moving to the Bundesliga. However his stint in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund was less than spectacular and he was rather unceremoniously loaned out to Premier League club Everton. His spectacular adoption to the English game and his pace in the wings saw him become an integral part of the Toffees midfield. In fact his form was so brilliant that David Moyes made the move permanent. In fact his time at Everton was so fruitful that it was just a matter of time before the bigger clubs came calling. Indeed it was no surprise when Tottenham Hotspur showed their interest in Steven Pienaar. However he was uncharacteristically poor during the entire time at Spurs which saw him loaned out to Everton exactly a year after the transfer. The move was made permanent this season by Everton paving the way for Steven Pienaar’s second homecoming.

His showings down the left flank and his partnership with Leighton Baines has indeed been a revelation this season. While he has genuinely been more of a goal threat this season his passing range has also not diminished one bit. His return of one goal and four assists from just seven matches is indeed incredible no matter how you choose to look at it. At the moment this wiry South African is the heart beat of this Everton side. At 30, he still has a few good years left to really make a mark before retiring and setting off towards the sunset. While what will happen is still left for the future there is no doubt that absolutely everyone will wish this genuinely nice guy all the very best for what is remaining of his career.

After all Steven Pienaar is one of the best example of the phase ‘No matter which club you support, you just can’t hate the guy.’
