Arsenal beating Real Madrid to sign this terrific young Spanish centre-half would be a coup

Why Arsenal beat Real Madrid to sign Mario Hermoso

According to a report in Sun Football, Premier League giants Arsenal are eyeing up Espanyol defender Mario Hermoso, who is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in La Liga. However, they could face a stern competition from current European champions Real Madrid, and Unai Emery’s men might find it difficult to get the deal over the line if Los Blancos take the forward step.

The club from the Spanish capital have a buy-back clause for the 23-year-old and could sign him for a fraction of a price that the Gunners are offering. Hermoso has received his first Spanish call-up and is in terrific form this season.

Despite Real Madrid being the overwhelming favourites to sign the player, here’s why Arsenal should beat them:

Arsenal’s procurement of a centre-back

Looking at the Arsenal squad, they are pretty well equipped in the attacking department, barring their need for a winger. Their midfield also requires one more addition to really make them a genuine contender in the future. However, the procurement of a centre-back is a must.

The Gunners have Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Sokratis as the options for two spots. Laurent Koscielny will come back into the fray sooner than later, but his age (33) would be a concern in Unai Emery’s project.

The qualities of some of them are not up to the standards as well, resulting in them conceding goals on a regular basis. They have shipped 15 goals in 12 league games this season, epitomising their need to strengthen that position.

Hermoso has been in fantastic form for Espanyol, helping the team to five clean sheets in 12 games. He is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Spanish league right now.

The 23-year-old is a physically strong centre-back who is very good in the air, winning aerial duels at a rate of 2.4. He makes tackles, interceptions and clearances at an average of 1.7, 1.3 and 5.3 per game, depicting his qualities as an all-around centre-back.

Verdict

Looking at this from the outside, Real Madrid already possess quality in the defensive department, much more than what Arsenal have. Hence, it makes sense for the Gunners to rival the Madrid side for the Spaniard’s signature.
