Arsenal raiding Real Madrid to sign this promising attacker for £18m would be one of Emery’s biggest coups

Arsenal opinion: Arsenal should sign Mariano Diaz

According to a report in the Sun , Real Madrid’s Mariano Diaz has been linked with a move to Arsenal for £18million. The youngster joined Real Madrid again only last season after a successful spell at Lyon. He was handed the number 7 jersey that was worn by iconic Real Madrid players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul Gonzalez.

He made 22 appearances in all competitions last season and scored 4 goals with no assists. He wasn’t given a proper chance at Madrid under any of the 3 managers that were at the helm last season and he will ultimately be seen as a disappointment by the Los Blancos.

Diaz was extremely impressive in the 2017/18 season when he was plying his trade in the Ligue 1 for Lyon. He made 45 appearances and scored 22 goals and provided 6 assists. Along with the likes of Nabil Fekir and Memphis Depay, he had formed a fiery attack and it earned him a move back to Spain.

However, this seems like yet another silly purchase from Madrid and is why he’s being moved on once again. As good as Diaz is, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo is a burden that no player should be realistically expected to shoulder.

Arsenal are in need of reinforcements in a lot of areas. They need to start with a centre-back and then look at the wings and left-back positions. Arsenal only have Alex Iwobi as a recognized winger who can play on both wings.

Unai Emery is often forced to play attacking midfielders like Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the wings, which often makes the team feel unbalanced. He’s even had to use Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the wings which is a waste of his talents.

Diaz can play in of the forward positions. He could do a job on the wings or as a forward. His preference is to cut in from the left wing onto his stronger right-foot and take shots on goal and he’d be a definite improvement on Alex Iwobi.

Conclusion

Unai Emery will feel hard done last season after coming so close to making it to the top-4 spots and winning the Europa League, to only see his side faltering at both stages.

He’ll need all the help he can get as Arsenal can’t financially compete with their other rivals. Diaz at the price mentioned above would be a bargain.
