Arsenal reviving their interest in this Russian World Cup star would go a long way in filling Ramsey void

Arsenal Opinion: The Gunners should revive interest in Aleksandr Golovin

Back in 2018, the Metro claimed Arsenal were interested in signing Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin after a sensational World Cup campaign. However, a move didn’t materialise and the 23-year-old instead joined AS Monaco from CSKA Moscow last summer.

Aleksandr Golovin endured a tough debut season at AS Monaco, who just avoided relegation from Ligue 1. The midfielder has failed to live up to the expectations at the club.

Nevertheless, he is an extremely talented footballer, which should prompt Arsenal to reignite their interest in the Russian international and sign him from Monaco this summer.

This summer has been a thing of immense frustration for Arsenal, with Unai Emery managing to sign just one player so far. With just Gabriel Martinelli added to the club halfway through July, the Gunners’ top brass need to accelerate their transfer plans.

Emery is keen to add experience and quality to his squad after a season plagued by individual errors and inconsistency. He has faced a tough task of reinforcing every single area of the squad with a very limited transfer budget.

While strengthening the defence following a poor 2018/19 campaign should be the Spanish tactician’s priority, he must also address the midfield problems.

Aaron Ramsey’s departure to Juventus on a free transfer has left the Arsenal boss with Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi as only options in central midfield.

As the Gunners would aim to get back into the top four as well as attempt to win the Europa League next season, Emery needs to beef up his squad and sign Golovin.

An excellent passer of the ball, Golovin is a versatile player who can play in different positions across the midfield. He has the ability to cover a lot of ground and tends to break up the play with good standing tackles and interceptions. The 23-year-old is capable of dribbling past players before sliding a through ball to a teammate.

He may just be the perfect fit for Emery’s midfield due to his agility, reading of the game, ability to take quick turns and make key defence-splitting passes in the final third.

An intelligent player, Golovin can provide that much-needed energy and bite to the Gunners midfield, whilst chipping in with crucial goals as well.

Verdict

That said, Arsenal should definitely revive their interest Golovin as he has all the attributes to be an ideal replacement for Aaron Ramsey.
