Here’s why it’s in Arsenal’s best interests to reignite a move for one of the Premier League’s best defensive midfielders

Arsenal opinion: Why Arsenal should reignite a move for Wilfred Ndidi

According to reports from the Standard, Arsenal are set to lose Lucas Torreira to AC Milan with the midfielder reportedly not happy in London. The report further adds that with former Sampdoria manager Marco Giampaolo appointed at AC Milan, the interest has piqued Torreira’s interest, with the midfielder keen on reuniting with his former boss.

After all, it was Giampaolo who played a massive role in Torreira becoming the player that he is today and the 23-year-old is rather keen on a return to Italy. Now those reports have been quashed by the Metro, with Torreira revealing that he is perfectly happy at Arsenal and has no plans to leave.

Even then, given just how rampant and aggressive the rumours have been over the last few weeks, maybe Arsenal do need to look elsewhere. Not just that, it seems that not even Granit Xhaka is untouchable with the Swiss international heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

It will leave a gaping hole in Arsenal’s midfield and one that the club need to desperately patch up. They have to add someone new regardless.

It’s exactly why a move for Wilfred Ndidi makes so much sense. The 22-year-old Nigerian star is having a ball at the AFCON, even being named man of the match in Nigeria’s latest win. It’s a massive rise and the midfielder has proven to be a sensational replacement for N’golo Kante.

Surrounded by a slew of flops before the 2018 summer window, Ndidi has perfectly replaced N’Golo Kante. Not to mention, in the two years since he arrived, Ndidi has missed just six games in the Premier League alone. That shows a simply stunning level of consistency and one that few Arsenal players have managed over the years.

It’s why Arsenal was linked with a move last summer but nothing happened and both Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira joined the club. Not just that, the Nigerian’s defensive nous combined with his ability to keep the ball moving with smart and accurate passes, make him an asset to any team.

His stamina and work-ethic have made him perfect for the Premier League, making an immediate impact for Leicester. It’s that ability, mentality and physicality that makes him a great move.

Conclusion

Arsenal need a few new additions this summer but if the club does end up losing players like Lucas Torreira or even Granit Xhaka then replacing them will prove to be very hard.

However, that being said, by adding Wilfred Ndidi, the club will not only circumvent that issue but also effectively replace both players in one full sweep.
