Arsenal should sort out their long-term defensive future by signing this promising Spaniard in the summer

Arsenal Opinion: Should Arsenal make a move for Francis Guerrero?

Arsenal needs defensive reinforcements in the summer window, and that’s something that has to be done given the state of their team. First-team stars Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Stephan Lichtsteiner are all 33 and older, with their careers coming to an end.

This means that the Gunners need long-term replacements for these players. While Unai Emery might have his own shortlist, the former Sevilla boss needs to make sure that he signs a right-back more than anything.

While he has used Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Carl Jenkinson, Lichtsteiner and even Shkrodan Mustafi at times, they are not long-term options. Hector Bellerin is the club’s first choice but the Spaniard tore his ACL during a win against Chelsea, which has ruled him out for the season.

More so, it also rules him out for the start of next season and this will pose a few problems for Arsenal. Given their budgetary issues (Mirror), the fact that the club needs another midfielder and a new goalkeeper (with Petr Cech retiring), it does give the club a headache next summer.

That’s exactly why the North London side should target La Liga star Francis Guerrero. A right-back by trade, the 22-year-old is a former winger like Hector Bellerin who slowly grew into a more defensive player. Time and Quique Setien saw Guerrero evolve into a right-back.

The Spaniard has become a key star at Real Betis and his presence at Arsenal would give Emery another option. While Guerrero is defensively sound, the 22 year old has so much more to his list of growing skills which also includes great tactical presence.

Add that to his technical ability, his speed going forward and pin-point crossing, everything points towards the young full-back becoming a successful right-back in the near future. But at the moment, he is far from being a finished product.

Like most former wingers, he struggles with consistency and has got caught out on more than one occasion this season. But under the right manager,
Francis Guerrero can iron out his weakness and develop into a good right-back.

Conclusion

Hence, the Gunners have to make a move for the youngster as it would settle their long-term future at right-back position.
