Arsenal signing this £25m Serie A star would certainly solidify one of the key areas on the pitch – opinion

Arsenal opinion: The Gunners should win the race for Jordan Veretout

According to the Metro, Arsenal are set to make a late approach for Serie A star Jordan Veretout. Currently at Fiorentina, the former Aston Villa man has done well with the Serie A side despite their obvious struggles.

However, Veretout does know the Premier League very well, having spent a season with Aston Villa. But he made less than 30 appearances for the club in his first and only season. While his spell with the Lions wasn’t bad, Villa were relegated and the 26-year-old left.

He eventually joined Fiorentina in the summer of 2017 after a cameo at Saint Étienne. It’s in the Serie A and even the Ligue 1 where Veretout really stepped up and changed a lot about himself. He became the reliable midfielder that he is today and adapted well to positioning issues.

It saw the 26-year-old become fluent as a number 10 and in a more-deeper number 6 role. Yet, it’s as a number 8 that Veretout really flourishes, thanks to a blend of creativity and defensive nous.

His late runs and defensive contributions will help Arsenal ease the transition into a life without a certain Welshman.

The Gunners have already lost Aaron Ramsey to Juventus, with the 28-year-old signing for the Italian giants on a Bosman. That would leave them with just three first-team midfield stars at their disposal and that is not good.

Furthermore, replicating Ramsey’s quality would see Arsenal spending at a premium. But given that Arsenal are considering a £25million bid (Metro), if they complete the move for that amount, Veretout wouldn’t be the most expensive player and it will allow the club to splurge on other areas.

They need to add at least a few new stars to their line-up and while they will not be world-class options, it should certainly be someone in and around a world-class bracket.

And if nothing else, Jordan Veretout has shown his ability in the Premier League a little over four years ago and despite Villa getting relegated, he was decent.

It shows just how well he adapted and for Arsenal, the move makes a lot of sense.

Conclusion

Jordan Veretout may not be the world-class superstar that Arsenal may want to replace Aaron Ramsey but he can help make a difference. With time and under Unai Emery, the Frenchman will be able to improve even further.
