Arsenal signing this 27-year-old ace with €35m release clause would provide Emery with answer to defensive woes

Arsenal opinion: Is Djene Dakonam the answer to Arsenal’s defensive woes?

According to a report from Football Espana, Arsenal are still keen on signing Getafe’s defensive rock Djene Dakonam in the summer. The Gunners were heavily linked with the Togolese centre-half in March when Unai Emery went to Spain to scout him.

The report reveals that Djene has a release clause in his contract which makes him available for €35million in the summer but Getafe’s president Angel Torres has confirmed that the club would be willing to let him leave for a slightly lesser fee.

Arsenal signing a defender of Djene’s quality for a fee under €35 million would be an absolute steal and the 27-year-old’s addition could well prove to be the answer for the Gunners’ woes in the heart of the defence.

Shkodran Mustafi’s performances have been below par this season, with the German’s positioning and concentration on the pitch costing him and Arsenal on multiple occasions. The signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos last summer has proven to be positive but the Greek is in his 30s and his age will play a factor in his performances in the coming years.

Laurent Koscielny will also be turning 34 in September and despite his brilliance since his return from injury, he will find it difficult to play every game in the season.

Makeshift centre-half Nacho Monreal’s contract with the club will expire in the summer which makes the addition of a new defender a priority.

Djene would be a fantastic addition to the Gunners’ backline and he has had a phenomenal season with Getafe in the La Liga this season. The 27-year-old has helped his side reach the top four and with three games left to play, they have a massive chance to make it into the Champions League for the first time in their career.

Djene’s physical presence at the back has made life a lot easier for Getafe this season. The Togolese international checks all the boxes for a modern-day centre-back and he would be a huge asset to any side. Fast, intelligent and a player who relishes a physical battle, Djene would be a brilliant fit in the Premier League.

Djene is also hugely versatile, having featured at right-back as well as in defensive midfield over the last two seasons. The defender’s authority at the back has earned him the captain’s armband on multiple occasions this season and Arsenal should have him high on their shortlist for the summer.

Conclusion

Arsenal’s need for a new centre-back has been overly evident this season. Shkodran Mustafi’s woes at the back have cost the Gunners dearly and a player like Djene is capable of coming in and solving that problem almost immediately.

Hence, Arsenal should not have any second thoughts about signing him in the summer.
