Arsenal signing this promising 21-year-old starlet would sort out their goalkeeping future for the next decade

Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners make a move for Markus Schubert?

After a rather lengthy and exceptional career, Petr Cech is finally calling it quits. The Czech Republic star has been an immense presence for both Arsenal and Chelsea over the course of his career and will finish with the most clean sheets in the Premier League.

It’s a stunning achievement and one that could have increased even further had his final years at Arsenal gone a little better. But that’s in the past and even at 207 clean sheets, he leaves a record that will be very hard to break in the near future.

Yet, he puts Arsenal in serious trouble as the Gunners will now have to splurge to add a new goalkeeper. Bernd Leno is the undisputed number one now at the club and will likely hold that title for the next few years.

However, behind him, Arsenal have nobody with Emiliano Martinez and David Ospina, not players that they can rely on.

The Colombian has been on loan with Napoli and has already revealed that it’s where he sees his future. Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has also done the same, revealing that he wants the 30-year-old at the club.

It leaves Emery with Emiliano Martinez and the 27-year-old is not someone that Arsenal can rely on, especially as someone who can replace Petr Cech. While he has done well on loan at Reading, winning several man of the match awards, he’s not someone who Arsenal can depend on.

Sure, three maybe even four years ago, when the Argentine was still a young hotshot but now at the age of 26, Martinez has shown nothing to prove that he should even be at the club. It’s why Arsenal need to start looking for the future and Markus Schubert fits the bill.

The 20-year-old has done well with Bundesliga side Dynamo Dresden and is available for free in the summer. It’s arguably a great move and combined with the potential to grow even further, makes it a no-brainer for Arsenal with the Leicester Mercury reporting they’re interested.

Schubert made his debut as a 17-year-old and has since gone on to make just over 80 appearances for the club, keeping 19 clean sheets. It’s why the Dresden tried so hard to keep him at the club but eventually failed, according to the Metro.

Conclusion

Markus Schubert may not be the world-class option that Arsenal want but with time and the right guidance, the 21-year-old has the potential to do great things. Plus the club has the added bonus that he’s a free agent and it allows Arsenal to save some money.
