Arsenal snapping up one of Dortmund’s many rising prospects would be a perfect step forward by Emery

Arsenal opinion: The Gunners should sign Dan-Axel Zagadou

According to reports from English news outlet the Daily Mail, Arsenal have entered the race for Borussia Dortmund star Dan-Axel Zagadou.

The North London side are looking for a  brand new centre-back and after bids for Joachim Andersen and even William Saliba have failed over the last few weeks.

This has seen the club branch out and looks for other options, which include Djene Dakonam and Armando Izzo amongst others. But, given just how talented he is, Dan-Axel Zagadou should be higher up on that list and the reports have indicated that he is.

It seems that Unai Emery is targeting younger and the more malleable defenders to help mould them into world-class stars so that the club can sell them for a much higher fee. It’s a tried and trusted method, one that has worked for quite a few clubs over the years.

But while Arsenal have never played a big part in that trend, the North London side have still sold their fair share of youth players. From Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Thierry Henry and even Nicolas Anelka. It’s a pool that the Gunners have dipped their toes into and done relatively well.

But now given the state of the team, they could certainly use someone young and malleable as they move towards the future. That’s exactly where someone like Dan-Axel Zagadou comes into play, with the 20-year old impressing at the U-20 World Cup in Poland.

The Frenchman even wore the armband for France as they kept two clean sheets before their eventual elimination. A versatile defender, Dan-Axel Zagadou can play not just as a centre-back, which is where he operates best but also as a full-back if necessary.

It shows the kind of athleticism that the young Frenchman has at his disposal and more importantly, his defensive solidity.

That’s what Arsenal need more than anything and Zagadou will provide that. He may have arrived as a free-agent from PSG but the 20-year-old has transformed himself into a defensive colossus.

One that combines the modern take with the no-nonsense older generation. It’s a rather rare combination and one that Dan-Axel Zagadou has the potential to take to another level altogether.

Conclusion

It’s been an interesting season for Arsenal with their defensive record letting the club down towards the end of the season. Things need to change and by adding someone as talented and young as Dan-Axel Zagadou will help serve Arsenal’s cause.

Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
