Arsenal opinion: Emery should win the race for Paul Mitchell

Sky Sports has reported that Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in a move for RB Leipzig’s Paul Mitchell. The Leipzig chief has been impeccable for the club, and has a catalogue of players that will be sold for at least double their fees.

It shows exactly why the Premier League’s biggest sides are after him but it’s Mitchell’s time at Tottenham that has attracted the giants. The former Southampton and Tottenham head of recruitment enjoyed a very successful spell in England before moving to Germany in February 2018.

Since then, RB Leipzig have signed the likes of Nordi Mukiele, Amadou Haidara and Tyler Adams among others. All three have the potential to command incredible sums of money in the future, which showcases what Mitchell can do.

In England, he produced the likes of Dele Alli, Sadio Mane and Kieran Trippier among various other stars. All three of the mentioned stars play regular football at the highest level in England, with Mane inching towards a potential Premier League title.

For Arsenal, that is a business model that they really need right now. They’ve lost Sven Mislintat and he has since joined VFB Stuttgart.

But the super scout’s impact is very visible, with him playing a big role in adding Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lucas Torreira, and Sokratis among others. But replacing him has proved to be a very tough job for Arsenal.

Their top targets were Monchi and Marc Overmars, but that clearly hasn’t gone their way. While Monchi re-joined Sevilla, former Arsenal man Overmars has instead opted to stay with current side Ajax in the hope of building an empire at the Dutch club.

Paul Mitchell, on the other hand, is the polar opposite to both Monchi and Overmars. Instead, he’s a lot like Sven Mislintat, with him capable of adding young players who can be sold at a premium in the future and also experienced stars.

This blend in modern-day football is very rare. Mislintat had it and the North London side made a mistake in letting him go. But they cannot make the same with Mitchell.

With his contract at RB Leipzig winding down and with both Manchester United and Chelsea also in the race, Arsenal have to push hard to get this man.

The Gunners need someone to fill that role and who better than yet another super-scout.

Arsenal need a sporting director to give manager Unai Emery a direction. The Spaniard knows the type of player he needs, but scouting them and signing them are another matter. That is exactly where someone like Paul Mitchell can step in, as the 37-year-old can help the club move forward.
