Arsenal would be utterly foolish to let go of £35m star amidst Serie A interest and Emery must dodge this bullet

Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners sell Granit Xhaka?

According to a report from Italian publication Calciomercato, Serie A giants Inter Milan are keen on a move for Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka in the summer. The Nerazzurri are looking to bolster their midfield options, with Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic and Xhaka both on their summer shortlist.

However, Arsenal would be foolish to sell their Swiss star in the summer, especially after the kind of season he has had with the Gunners. Arsenal are in a tight fight to qualify for the Champions League and Granit Xhaka is not the type of midfielder that they would want to miss if they get there.

Xhaka has had a massive improvement under new boss Unai Emery and when he has been fit, the £35m Swiss international has been a mainstay in the Gunners squad.

Xhaka has thrived with the added responsibility in central midfield given by the Arsenal boss and his performances even earned the captain’s armband on a few occasions this season.

Xhaka’s outstanding range of passes from central midfield is one of Arsenal’s biggest assets and his balance between attack and defence is vital in Unai Emery’s system.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach star has formed an outstanding partnership with Lucas Torreira in the midfield and the duo’s chemistry has been a joy to watch.

Despite only being 26 years old, Xhaka is a real leader in the Arsenal side and his experience next to young guns like Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi is invaluable for the Gunners.

Xhaka even extended his current deal with Arsenal at the start of the season and the North Londoners have rightly tied him down until the summer of 2023.

Xhaka has also been handy with goals, having scored 4 times already this season, two of which were outstanding direct freekicks. The 26-year-old’s ability on the dead ball, be it a freekick or a corner, is a huge asset for the Gunners and his ability to shoot from distance has often given his side something out of nothing.

Arsenal are already losing Aaron Ramsey in the summer, with the Welshman having agreed on a deal to join Italian champions Juventus. Losing Xhaka on top of Aaron Ramsey would be a humungous blow for the Gunners in their ambitions for the coming years.

Conclusion

Arsenal will be foolish to even consider selling Granit Xhaka irrespective of what Inter Milan might offer in the summer. A player of the Swiss international’s quality is extremely hard to find and Arsenal should do everything possible to fend off the interest from the Italian giants.
