Arsenal’s defensive issues would be solved once and for all if they land this 6ft 4in giant – opinion

Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners go for Joachim Andersen?

The sheer fact that Arsenal conceded 51 goals over the course of their Premier League season is one of the reasons why the Gunners didn’t make the top four. They arguably had the best chance to do so, facing not a single top six club in their final few matches.

But defensive issues saw them concede 8 goals along the way with two defeats and a draw in their final four games. But what’s done is done and they are in the Europa League final, which gives the club their best chance of making it to the Champions League.

It’s incredible that this is their first final since 2006. Arsenal will not face a team from outside the Premier League but instead, their cross-town rivals in Chelsea.

That doesn’t make the fixture any easier for either side but the pressure is on for Unai Emery and his men, as Chelsea have already qualified for the Champions League.

The Blues leapfrogged Tottenham into third place and now have a guaranteed spot in next season’s group stages, which is a good achievement for Maurizio Sarri.

It could have been Arsenal instead of Chelsea but their end-season collapse did see the club fall flat.

That should be one of the club’s and Emery’s top decisions this summer, adding reinforcements to their back-line. Furthermore, Laurent Koscielny is ageing.

But Football.London has reported that Arsenal have joined the race for Joachim Anderson. The Sampdoria center-back has had a phenomenal season for the Serie A side and that is what Arsenal need.

He missed just five games this season but barring that, Andersen has missed no game in the Serie A. He’s proven to be a rock at the back, someone who is cool and comfortable on the ball.

Moreover, his 6’4” frame gives him an advantage when it comes to aerial duels and he is also surprisingly agile given his height. However, Andersen’s agility is not to be mistaken with speed, as the 22-year-old has often struggled with faster strikers.

Yet, he’s made up for his lack of speed with a great sense of positioning and defensive nuance. That’s what Arsenal need more than anything for next summer, which is what Andersen can provide.

Conclusion

Arsenal need a solid centre-back and Joachim Andersen more than fits the bill for the North London side. Furthermore, the fact that Lucas Torreira is also from Sampdoria does give Arsenal a small advantage in the race and that’s one that they need to utilize.
