Ashley Young vs €60m Manchester United target – Stats show that Mourinho should sign the latter

Alex Sandro vs Ashley Young – Do Manchester United Really Need The Juventus Left-Back?

Manchester United have been linked with Juventus left-back Alex Sandro for quite some time now. Juventus are demanding more than €60m for the left-back. The Red Devils have struggled to find a permanent option for that role ever since Patrice Evra departed the club. Luke Shaw was brought in to take up that responsibility but a terrible injury kept him from cementing his place in the team. In his absence, the club utilised makeshift options and Ashley Young proved to be the best in that area.

He has played regularly as a left-back ever since but to be honest, he cannot be a long-term option. Also, Shaw has returned from an injury and has been flitting in and out of the team. It is unsure if Mourinho wants to keep him or sell him but if he chooses to do the latter, United will need a replacement. Although they have been linked with a number of targets, Sandro is understood to be the manager’s preferred choice.

But how do Sandro’s stats compare with that of Young’s? Let’s take a closer look at how the two players have performed so far this season.

Ashley Young vs Alex Sandro

In 20 appearances across competitions for United this season, Young has contributed 2 goals and 4 assists. He has picked up 5 yellow cards in the process while averaging 0.9 shots per game. His pass success-rate stands at a healthy 78.4% and he wins about 0.8 aerial duels per match. Young has received the Man Of The Match award 4 times so far. When it comes to his defensive duties, the player makes an average of 1.9 tackles, 1.9 interceptions, 2.8 clearances and 0.3 blocks.

Meanwhile, Sandro has as well made 20 appearances across competitions for the Italian giants this season. He has managed to chip in with a goal and 4 assists while picking up 4 yellow cards. Averaging 0.7 shots per game, the defender has a pass success-rate of 86.4%. He wins about 1.6 aerial duels per game and has been declared as the Man Of The Match once so far. As far as his defensive contributions are concerned, Sandro averages 2.2 tackles, 1 interception, 1.3 clearances and 0.1 blocks a game.

Verdict

Sandro is definitely a worthy proposition but only if Mourinho decides to part ways with Shaw. Given how solid Young has been, it would be criminal to keep him away from the side. Rotating 2 defenders in that area seems like a better option instead of retaining 3 players since one of them will have to occupy a lower spot in the pecking order.
