Aston Villa re-signing their former star with over 100 games for their club would strengthen their defence massively

Why Aston Villa should re-sign Ciaran Clark from Newcastle

Aston Villa were a club going through a downward curve when Steve Bruce was in charge, however, they sacked him and brought Dean Smith from Brentford. Since then, the Birmingham-based club have looked a better team on and off the field.

The win against Derby County away from home just before the international break suggested that this team is getting better under the current management.

Now with the festive period coming up and the January transfer window not far away, the aim should be to keep the positive momentum going. In addition, the bonus would be to add a few players to strengthen the squad and enhance their chances for Premier League promotion by the end of this season.

Why Ciaran Clark?

Looking at the Aston Villa squad, they are short on first-team centre-backs. Axel Tuanzebe and James Chester are the main options, with James Bree, who hasn’t featured much, as a backup.

Hence, it is pretty evident that an injury or two might mean the manager would be in trouble, with games coming thick and fast in the coming months.

As per Birmingham Mail, Chester is out injured and might not be a part of the squad for Villa’s derby game against Birmingham City. That means Dean Smith has to pick the Bree-Tuanzebe partnership or trust in Alan Hutton or Mile Jedinak to fill in.

Therefore, it is imperative from the club’s viewpoint that they sign a new centre-back in the winter window. One player who could help them in this situation is Ciaran Clark. The ex-Villa Park favourite joined Newcastle but is now not able to get into the first-team regularly.

Rafa Benitez seems to be happy with Federico Fernandez-Jamal Lascelles partnership, leaving Clark on the bench.

With Florian Lejeune to come into the team after his injury and Fabian Schar waiting in the wings, it would be better if the 29-year-old leaves the club and looks for playing options elsewhere. The best thing would be to join his former club, who require a centre-back.

From Aston Villa’s perspective, they would get a player who played over 100 games for them and stayed for over six years at the club. He would understand the value of representing the club, which is an invaluable asset.
