Aston Villa opinion: The Villans should make a move for Kalvin Phillips
According to English news outlet the Telegraph, Aston Villa are very interested in making a move for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips. Villa boss Dean Smith is trying to overhaul his squad with the club releasing not one but eight players since they won the playoff finals.
It was a rather entertaining season for the Lions but to survive in the Premier League, they need to keep that going.Given the fact that the club has released not one but two defensive midfielders, they need someone just like Kalvin Phillips on their books.
The 23-year-old has proved himself to be phenomenal find by Leeds United and one that has flourished under Marcelo Bielsa’s tutelage. He was arguably one of the Whites’ best stars this season, proving to be a revelation.
It’s one of the many reasons that Leeds United did as well as they did because they had someone like Kalvin Phillips flourishing in midfield.
Barely 23 years old, Philips has been an integral part of Leeds United’s team this season and has also played in a wide variety of positions. Yet, that has never been a problem, with the 23-year-old doing well where ever he was placed.
His main position, however, is as a defensive midfielder which is where Phillips has flourished for Marcelo Bielsa. A consistent and reliable presence with the ball, he has averaged 52 passes with a game at a passing accuracy of 82%.
Not only that, he is defensively sound, averaging 2.6 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per game. Those are phenomenal statistics for any player in the world.
That is an average that no Aston Villa midfielder can match up to, with only Mile Jedinak making more clearances. If that doesn’t showcase just why Villa need Kalvin Phillips in their side then nothing will and for the meagre fee of £14 million, the Lions can make him theirs.
That is something that will only serve to help the club as they try and navigate the tough Premier League.
