Aston Villa should not hesitate to splash £2.5m to sign this Barnsley ace in the summer and boost defensive options

Aston Villa Opinion – Should Aston Villa sign Liam Lindsay?

According to a report in Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa have been linked with a summer move for Barnsley centre-back Liam Lindsay.

Manager Dean Smith is already formulating his plans for the next transfer window and he is keen on the 23-year-old. The player could cost around
£2.5m. (h/t Derby Telegraph)

Truth be told, Villa have been terrible at the back this season – chiefly the reason why they are 11th in the table, eight points behind sixth-placed Bristol City.

Hence, signing a quality centre-back makes sense for them when the window reopens. Here’s why they should sign Liam Lindsay:

Villa can solve their long overdue centre-back issue

As of now, Villa have Tyrone Mings, James Chester and Tommy Elphick as the options for the centre-back position. Axel Tuanzebe is also there, but he is been injured for a some time now.

While Mings is on loan from Bournemouth and Tuanzebe from Manchester United, Elphick’s contract runs down in the summer window and he hasn’t signed an extension yet.

Thus, signing Lindsay would be a welcome addition to the squad. The 23-year-old’s progression has been consistently positive ever since he started playing professional football.

As part of his mini-achievement in Scottish football, while he was playing for Patrick Thistle, the Scotsman was named in the top-flight team of the year in 2017 – the only player not belonging to Celtic or Aberdeen to be included.

In terms of the attributes, Lindsay is physically strong and very good in the air, making him a great exponent in both boxes. His reading of the game is improving year by year, which shows he is learning and implementing new things to his game to become a better version of himself every other year.

Conclusion

At 23, the Scotsman has nearly 10 years of top-flight football left in him. Hence, if Aston Villa sign him, they can get a player who can sought their centre-back issues out for the years to come.

That being said, Dean Smith and his men must pull the trigger on this transfer before any other potential suitor comes calling.
