The Croatian keeper has undergone a knee surgery which could force him out for the rest of this season.

Kalinic suffered the injury while he was on the international break, following the game against Azerbaijan.

Jed Steer, who has been impressive since his return from his loan spell, will be expected to do the goalkeeping duties

Initially, Steer was called by Villa to provide cover for Kalinic and to replace injured Orjan Nyland.

The English shot-stopper got his opportunity when the newly bought Croatian was sidelined, owing to injury.

After witnessing his excellent displays in a string of games, the Lions decided to renew Steer’s contract for another year.

Kalinic couldn’t live up to the expectations, as he failed to produce clean sheets because of his lacklustre performance.

Within a short space of time, he has conceded 12 goals, raising questions regarding his standards and stability.

Meanwhile, Steer has become an absolute fan-favourite and been backed by the Villa supporters to continue as the first choice keeper.

Dean Smith’s men have now gone unbeaten in their last seven meetings, recovering from a dreary start to the year.

Furthermore, they have skyrocketed to the fifth position from 11th in the Championship table.

Jack Grealish and Tammy Abraham were the catalysts behind the club’s recent form.
