Barcelona signing this 24-year-old Man United star would add some much-needed strength to a key area

Barcelona opinion: Should Barca sign Lindelof?

According to a report from The Sun, Victor Lindelof has emerged as the shock transfer target for Barcelona

The Catalans are in the transfer market for a centre-back and have turned their attention towards the Manchester United defender after missing out on preferred target Matthijs De Ligt.

Elsewhere, Lindelof, 24, moved to Old Trafford in 2017 and was off to an underwhelming start.

Yet, the Swedish defender made his presence felt from the beginning of 2018/19 campaign despite the Red Devils failing to qualify for the Champions League in the end.

The former Benfica defender played his heart out in every game he played for and turned out to be one of the few positives in a lacklustre season for  United.

Will Lindelof be the solution for Barca’s defensive crisis?

Barca’s defence in the previous season was quite unbreachable as Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet together formed a solid defensive unit. Though  Pique was outstanding throughout the campaign, the Catalans should look for his successor, given that he is in the twilight of his career.

Barca acquired Jean Clair Todibo from Toulouse earlier this season and they are already concerned over the French man’s attitude in training. Meanwhile, Samuel Umtiti has been worrying the fans after a string of injury layoffs.

With that being said, the Blaugrana can avail the services of Lindelof, who won the Swedish footballer of the Year award in 2018.

He held a pass success percentage of 89% in Premier League last season, which is an important factor in terms of the possession-based style of play that Barca is well known for. And his imposing figure also proved to be crucial in winning the ball in the air, as he averaged 2.5 in aerial duels.

Verdict

The Blaugrana has given up their hopes on pursuing Ajax centre-back De Ligt as Juventus look to be his probable next destination. Yet, they can count on Lindelof, a player with overwhelming potential and who comes with a reasonable price tag.
