Full Time: Liverpool 3-0 Middlesbrough
UEFA Champions League football will return to Anfield next season, after three years, as Liverpool beat Middlesbrough 3-0 to finish fourth in the Premier League on the final day.
After a frustrating 45 minutes, Liverpool managed to break the deadlock in the injury time through Georginio Wijnaldum. The Reds were off to a blistering start in the second half, with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana scored within the first ten minutes to put the game to bed. Here is how the Liverpool players fared on the day:
Liverpool Player Ratings
Simon Mignolet – 6/10
Hardly called into action for the course of the game. One good stop from Adam Forshaw in the second half.
Nathaniel Clyne – 6.5/10
Looked a good outlet down the right side and got forward well, but his decision making disappointed a bit. Played a part in the lead up to the opener.
Joel Matip – 6/10
Carried the ball out of the back well. Not really under any pressure defensively with Boro rarely threatening.
Dejan Lovren – 5/10
Extremely lucky to have stayed on the pitch after a poor challenge on Patrick Bamford in the first period.
James Milner – 7/10
Extremely comfortable down the left-flank and was always high up in the visitors’ half.
Emre Can – 7/10
Caught out of positions at times early on in the game, but improved with time. Another mature display from the German who has really come into his own in the business end of the season.
Gini Wijnaldum – 8/10
Thumped home the crucial opener that eased the nerves at Anfield. Saw a lot of the ball and kept driving his team forward.
Philippe Coutinho – 7/10
Dictated play from his deeper role in midfield, creating opportunities. His shooting was a little off on the day, but his brilliant free-kick in the second period sealed the win.
Adam Lallana – 7/10
Took the third goal of the game with aplomb to send Anfield into a tizzy. Scratchy at times in the first period, but grew into the game after the restart.
Roberto Firmino – 7/10
Struggled to get going due to his lack of fitness, but his movement was smart and sharp. His flick put Wijnaldum through for the first goal.
Daniel Sturridge – 6/10
Could not repeat the heroics of the last game. Dropped too deep on occasions, but did came close on one occasion.
Substitutes
Lucas Leiva – NA
Replaced Firmino for the last ten minutes.
Divock Origi – NA
Came on for Sturridge in the 83rd minute.
Alberto Moreno – NA
Replaced Milner with less than five minutes left.
