Bristol City signing this proven Championship goalscorer would push them towards PL promotion next season

Bristol City opinion: The Robins should reignite interest in Matej Vydra

According to reports from the Bristol Post, are set to let former Championship golden boot winner Matej Vydra leave this summer. The striker joined the Clarets last summer but has failed to make a meaningful impact with the club in the Premier League.

But this does open a few roads for him, as his ability in the Championship is proven. The report further adds that Bristol City have taken a keen interest in reigniting a move for a player that they were heavily linked with for last summer.

The Robins were then looking for a replacement for Bobby Reid, who left for Cardiff City and believed that Matej Vydra was their man. Instead, Vydra left for Burnley and the Robins signed Andreas Weimann and Mo Eisa.

While the former managed to finish the season with 10 goals, Eisa struggled to make any impact and was sold for a profit. It’s also why it now makes sense for Bristol City to reignite a move for Matej Vydra, given the state of their team. The 27-year-old former Derby County striker did struggle in the Premier League.

But as mentioned above, his record in the Championship is untarnished. In fact, Vydra not only finished last season as the top scorer but did it in style with 21 goals to his name.

Before that, the 27-year-old averaged just around 11-12 goals a season in his league campaigns, with his best being the 20 goals and 8 assists he scored for Watford.

It shows the rise that the striker has had over the course of his career, and just why he can be an asset to Bristol City. The Robins were chasing after a promotion playoff spot but fell just short in the end, missing out by a mere four points.

It was a brilliant run for the club and a run that few critics expected after the first 20 odd games that the club had.

Things were so bad, that at one stage, Bristol City were sitting in 18th before slowly making their way back up. Things need to change and to do that, the club needs someone just like Matej Vydra on their books, and it’s not just because of the fact that he can score goals.

The 27-year-old is a hard-working star and one who has played across the attacking line over the course of his career. Not to mention, he has a proven record of scoring bags of goals in the Championship.

Conclusion

Given that Famara Diedhiou finished as their top scorer with just 13 goals, Bristol City needs someone like Matej Vydra to lead their line. The 27-year-old will undoubtedly be an asset to the club and with time, he will find his footing in a league that he has flourished in.
