Burnley landing 27-year-old for £8m could turn out to be a masterstroke by Sean Dyche

Why Burnley must do everything to sign Sam Clucas from Swansea City

Premier League side Burnley are closing in on signing Swansea City midfielder Sam Clucas. The move for the 27-year-old, which is reportedly worth £8m, was confirmed by Swansea manager Graham Potter.

Burnley need more depth in the midfield before the season starts. Clucas is a quality player, with experience and know-how of the Premier League, who can add a different dimension to Sean Dyche’s midfield.

He is a high-class passer of the ball and a natural ball retainer to provide stability in possession. The 27-year-old will certainly fit Dyche’s rigid 4-4-2 system, playing either as one of the central midfielders or as a No. 10 in the 4-4-1-1.

Player Analysis – Sam Clucas

Clucas is adept at linking the play between the defence and the attack. The 27-year-old is calm on the ball and always seems to have an extra second compared to other players. This allows him to put his head up and pick out a crucial key pass. He has a pass completion rate of 83.6%, epitomising his propensity to be secure in possession.

Clucas is good at covering defensive spaces too and is never shy of making tackles to break up opposition attacks, doing so at an average of 1.2 in the league last season. He also steps up to intercept a pass, having averaged 1 per game.

Encapsulating the above-mentioned facts, the 27-year-old is a viable box-to-box midfielder and a good option for Dyche. His versatility will aid the manager to deploy him depending on the severity of the situation or as per the opponent’s quality.

Verdict

With Scott Arfield gone, the Clarets require a creative midfielder who can add some goals, and Clucas fits that bill perfectly. For the 27-year-old as well, it will be an opportunity to continue playing in the Premier League after getting relegated with Swansea last season.
