Burnley’s ambitious £15m raid to sign this Chelsea star would go a long way in replacing James Tarkowski

Burnley Opinion – Clarets in for Fikayo Tomori – Good Move?

According to a report in Sun, Burnley are looking to make a £15m move for young Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori in order to replace in-demand James Tarkowski.

Clarets manager Sean Dyche is braced for a host of offers for the latter, with the club slapping a price tag of around £40m over his head (h/t Sun). Leicester City are interested in the Englishman as they are in fear of losing Harry Maguire to Manchester United. (h/t Sun)

If Tarkowski leaves, Burnley would do well by replacing him with Tomori. The 21-year-old, who played for Derby County on loan from Chelsea and was one of the key players for the Rams in their run to the playoff final, may not be easy to prise out, especially after the arrival of Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge. As of now, his contract with the Blues runs until the summer of 2021. Here’s why Burnley should sign him if Tarkowski leaves during this transfer window:

Tomori could be a decent long-term addition to the Clarets’ squad

Predominantly a centre-back who can operate on either side, Fikayo Tomori is perfectly capable of playing at right-back if required by the team. If we talk about last season, the 21-year-old only plied his trade in central defence for Lampard’s Derby.

In terms of his performance, he was one of the top defenders in the Championship during the 18/19 campaign and was rightly named as the Rams’ Player of the Year.

The 21-year-old’s attributes include good recovery pace to match the runs of the forwards. He is excellent at reading the game and defending the spaces while being decent when it comes to accuracy at passes out from the back. In addition, he is also physically strong on/off the ball.

Thus, Burnley are right in keeping him as an option to sign if James Tarkowski leaves the club this summer. He could be an ideal partner for Ben Mee in the long run.

Conclusion

All in all, we can conclude by saying that the Clarets shouldn’t hesitate t make a move for Tomori, if and when Tarkowski leaves them in the coming days.
