Can Torres Deliver This Season As Promised ??

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is aiming to have a good season ahead and hopes to forget the dismal form he showed last year. It will be a magical year claims the Spaniard. The 28 year old striker is the only out and out striker left at the club as there is no more Drogba.

It has been a positive start for Torres this season as he has scored twice in three games, making a statement of intent that he can fill the void left by Drogba and vows to take full responsibility on his shoulders. The striker also claimed that he is hoping to get back his world class form that he showed at Anfield.

Torres aims to get better

Speaking in an interview, the Spaniard spoke about his personal target and how he has adapted to life at Stamford Bridge.

“Didier is not here anymore so there is more responsibility for me and I’m ready for the challenge, Hopefully, everything is going to be OK and we will work hard. Now I am looking for new personal targets, which is to get as many goals as possible and, hopefully, I will score more than I did in my best season at Liverpool. We have the squad to do that and we have five more trophies to play for, so it could be a magic season.”

Torres was initially criticized for not being at the crucial positions in front of goal. His dismal shooting and his failure to convert easy chances created pressure from the beginning of his Chelsea career, but after almost 18 months at the club, Torres feels he has understood the expectations out of him and says he is ready for the challenge.

“For me, the striker has to be in the box, Once you have to run into the channel you have lost your position. So I try to spend more time in the box and leave that job for the wingers. Obviously when a striker goes to the channels, the opposite winger has to come inside and finish as a striker. This is the job – we have to make sure we are all working in the same way. But the striker has to be in the middle and the wingers go into the channels. These are the basics of football.”

And the 28-year-old is impressed by his club’s business in the transfer market as he believes new signings Eden Hazard and Oscar can help him and the team to win more trophies. Torres will now have a host of the best midfielders around him, with the likes of Mata, Lampard, Hazard, Ramires and Oscar around him and it is the time to deliver for the Spaniard.

“In my first full season we got two trophies, which is the thing I was looking for when I came, But now I have more objectives, more personal targets and this season is very important for me. We have the chance to win more trophies this season. I think all the fans are excited about the league again, after a couple of years of not winning the trophy, so I think it’s a good time, especially me, to give something back to the fans.

Torres insists last season was not a complete personal failure, claiming he had to adapt to his new role within the Chelsea team and praised his manager Roberto Di Matteo for getting the best out of the squad. Last season I became a more complete player. I played in a different position and the style of Chelsea was different to the style I used to play,” he said.
