“Cant wait for the season to start!”: Some Nottingham Forest fans excited after 1-0 win vs Scunthorpe + Match Report

Scunthorpe United 0-1 Nottingham Forest – Match Report + Twitter Reactions

Nottingham Forest defeated Scunthorpe United 1-0 in their penultimate pre-season friendly at the Glanford Park, courtesy of a Ryan Yates strike.

Manager Aitor Karanka handed defender Tobias Figueiredo a start, giving him his first taste of action of the pre-season, while latest arrival Jack Colback found himself on the bench.

The visitors carved out the first opening of the game with just four minutes on the clock, as new signings Joao Carvalho and Diogo Goncalves combined to create a chance for Daryl Murphy at the back post. But his effort was well cleared off the line by the covering Conor Townsend.

Forest continued to dominate possession but failed to conjure up anything meaningful in the final-third as they found themselves in good areas but the final ball was lacking.

Just about halfway through the first period, Goncalves had a great chance to hand the Reds the lead, after he was played through by Tendayi Darikwa but the winger’s lobbed attempt was comfortably saved by Rory Watson.

Three minutes later, Carvalho’s free-kick was neatly flicked on by Adlene Guedioura, with Yates present to smash home from six yards out against his former loan side to make it 1-0.

Gil Dias had a shot blocked just after the half-hour mark before Ben Osborn fired the follow-up effort over the bar. Soon after, Murphy dragged a shot wide, after some nice interplay between the Forest players, as they headed into the break with a deserved lead.

Five minutes into the second half, it was nearly 2-0 for Karanka’s men, as Guedioura’s long-range strike managed to graze the top of the crossbar. Goncalves continued to cause problems for Scunthorpe, while Murphy failed to make the most of a cross from Carvalho, heading it straight into the keeper’s hands.

The failure of Forest to kill the game off almost came back to bite them moments later as Scunthorpe almost levelled, as substitute Stephen Humphrys dragged his effort just wide of the near post after some good play on the right by Olufela Olomola.

It acted as a wake-up call for Forest, who once again took control of the game, as Darikwa and Osborn were presented with opportunities in the last twenty minutes of the match, both of which went untaken. However, with the home team not really threatening, Forest held onto their slender lead.

It was a good all-round performance from Karanka’s men that will have pleased the manager before the final friendly against Bournemouth this weekend.

Here’s how the supporters reacted to the victory.
