The on-loan defender is due to return to the King Power Stadium this Summer but Brendan Rodgers insists that he has to extend his loan spell.

The Northern Irish manager revealed that he is happy to send the Croatian to Scotland next season.

Besides, Benkovic also had a say on his future, as he wants to be at Park Head for one more season.

He said, (h/t The Daily Record UK)

“When Brendan Rodgers left Celtic, he sent me a lot of nice words and told me he was very pleased with my performances.

“Whatever he decides, I will go along with.

Furthermore, the 22-year-old added that his experience as a Hoops player helped him prepare for the Premier League.

He also revealed that current interim manager Neil Lennon was also happy with his performances this season.

“I have spoken to Neil Lennon. He told me that he would like me to stay at Celtic for another season.

I have been really pleased with my season at Celtic. Of course, you can always do better, but I have played a lot of games at a very high level. Everyone at Celtic has told me they are happy with me.

Benkovic was really pivotal for the Hoops this season before his injury-lay-off stagnated his progress.

The centre-back appeared for 23-games this season so far.

The former Dinamo Zagreb player signed for the Premier League outfit in 2008 and is yet to make his first appearance for the first-team.

Lennon successfully led the Bhoys to lift the Premiership title for the eighth time in a row.
