I’d like to thank everyone for showing me such support across the past few months. I am so grateful to the club for everything they have given me and the way in which they have supported me so strongly.

“The Celtic supporters, too, have been a huge source of inspiration and strength for me and I want to thank them all sincerely for staying with me.

And the fans were elated to hear the news and shared their thoughts on Twitter.

Griffiths has been a familiar figure among the Park Head fans since his arrival in 2014.

The former Dundee player reached his 100th goal mark in August thus becoming the first player to achieve the feat in 13 years.

He penned a new deal the following month which will keep him at the club until 2022.

Neil Lennon, the new caretaker manager, offered his thoughts on the Scottish striker.

“We are really pleased that Leigh will be looking to get things going again at Lennoxtown and be making a phased return to training.”

Lennon added that he wouldn’t be rushing 28-year-old’ recovery time at any cost.

The Hoops will take on their arch-rivals Rangers this Sunday in a massive Old Firm derby.
