Celtic signing one of these 2 centre-backs would be pure gold – here is why the move would work out

Celtic FC Opinion – Two centre-backs Celtic can target in the summer

Celtic are currently in a good position when it comes domestic superiority. They are leading the league by eight points, have already won one cup and are in the last-eight of the other.

Hence, in a way, Brendan Rodgers’ men are well set to win the domestic treble if things go the way they are going. However, European setback should be taken seriously and work must be done to rectify that come next season.

In terms of the squad, they are a bit light in the defensive department, especially at right-back and at times, in central defence. To add to that, Filip Benkovic, who has done well at the back, is on loan from Leicester City and is likely to go back to King Power stadium in the summer. (Leicester Telegraph)

Brendan Rodgers

Dedryck Boyata has managed to stay for one more season but his contract expires in few months time and he hasn’t signed an extension yet. Hence, it looks like Celtic will have to be proactive in the summer window, scouting centre-backs and signing them.

Here are the two options they can consider:

Gary Cahill (from Chelsea)

The Chelsea man will have his contract run down at the end of this season, and it doesn’t look like he would sign an extension. Hence, the Englishman will be a free agent in the summer window.

For that reason, Celtic can sign the 33-year-old, probably on a two-year deal and solidify the back-line not just for the domestic games, but also for the continental ones.

Tommy Elphick (Aston Villa)

Another player who will be out of contract at the end of this season and hasn’t signed an extension yet. If this year is anything of an evidence, Elphick has been a star at the back, firstly for Hull City and then for Aston Villa from January onwards.

The 31-year-old is an experienced defender who has all the qualities to potentially lead that Celtic back-line, provided the Hoops dangle an interest in him in the summer window.
