Celtic signing this 27-year-old Scottish star is an absolute no-brainer and Lennon must get him

Celtic FC opinion: Hoops should sign Stephen O’Donnell – agreed?

According to a report in Scottish Sun, Scottish side Kilmarnock will look to cash in their right-back Stephen O’Donnell during this summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old is out of contract in 12 months time, and the club doesn’t want to lose him on a free transfer next summer (h/t Scottish Sun). They tabled a new deal earlier in the season, but no agreement was struck. (h/t Scottish Sun)

As per the report, several English Championship clubs are interested in the player, and Killie will listen to offers (h/t Scottish Sun). Celtic’s new manager Neil Lennon could also be interested in the right-back. (h/t Scottish Sun)

O’Donnell has been a consistent figure at Kilmarnock for the past 18 months now. He is a quality player, who has done well to attract interest from other clubs.

Here’s why Celtic should sign the 27-year-old during this window:

Getting a proper right-back option would be good for the Hoops

Up until the end of this season, Celtic had three options at right-back – Mikael Lustig, Jeremy Toljan and Cristian Gamboa.

However, while Lustig  is out of contract this summer and is being offered a move back to his native club in Sweden (h/t BBC), Toljan is a loanee from Dortmund and his deal ends this summer and Gamboa’s contract also runs out this summer, meaning he could be on his way out of Parkhead as well.

Hence, it makes sense for the Scottish treble winners to sign a new right-back during this transfer window. For that reason, Stephen O’Donnell could be an ideal choice.

The Scotland international is a quality player, who predominantly is a right-back, but can operate as a defensive midfielder if required. He is a physically strong player, who possesses the pace to make runs up and down the field.

The 27-year-old isn’t bad at delivering crosses into the box and one-on-one defending in wide areas. His versatility is always a plus-point to his game.

Conclusion

Therefore, it is a no-brainer for Celtic to make a move for O’Donnell this summer. He would certainly be an upgrade to their current right-back options.
