Celtic’s reinforcing the central defence by reigniting interest in this no-nonsense 25-year-old wall would be a massive coup

Celtic FC Opinion: Why Samir Memisevic will be a good fit for the Hoops?

Back in August 2018, a report from Oslobedenje claimed Celtic were interested in signing FC Groningen defender Samir Memisevic.

However, a deal didn’t come to fruition and the Hoops instead signed Filip Benkovic on a season-long from Leicester City.

Samir Memisevic, 25, has shone for FC Groningen this season, mustering three goals in 25 Eredivisie appearances. The Bosnian is out of contract at Groningen at the end of the season.

Despite the Dutch club offering him a new three-year contract, the defender hasn’t signed an extension and looks keen to move on for a different adventure.

Celtic are not short in the central defence department at the moment but would need a centre-back ahead of the new season.

Dedryck Boyata is certain to leave the Bhoys as he comes to the end of his contract this summer. And his availability on a potential free transfer has already seen him attract interest from Leicester City, with former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers keen to reunite with the defender.

Furthermore, Filip Benkovic, on-loan at Parkhead, will also likely be a part of Rodgers’ plans at the King Power Stadium next season.

That would leave the Scottish giants with Jozo Simunovic, Kristoffer Ajer and Jack Hendry — but the trio has not lived up to the plate due to consistency and injury problems.

That makes signing a new centre-half important for Celtic and they should make a move for Samir Memisevic this summer.

Memisevic is a tall, strong, no-nonsense defender who could be ideal for the Hoops. The Bosnian is a smart player, one that doesn’t jump into tackles to recover the ball.

The 25-year-old has everything at his disposal to succeed. He is conservative with his passing but his physical and athletic attributes make him a really tough defender to come up against.

Not to forget, Memisevic has done well in a defensive midfield role this season for Groningen. He has offered steel and tenacity in front of the defence and he would give the manager a lot of options tactically.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international’s versatility could come in handy with Scott Brown, who has slowed down in the last 18 months after entering the final stages of his career.

Verdict

Celtic need to be proactive in terms of signing a central defender, and Memisevic would be a really shrewd addition to their backline. A club like Celtic would be perfect for the 25-year-old as far as his next adventure is concerned.
