Championship team of the weekend – matchday 6
The Championship has always been a competitive league in English football, where teams fight tooth and nail every week to better their chances of getting promoted to the Premier League. This weekend saw the top two teams fight out a physical 0-0 draw, while Aston Villa crumbled to heap misery on Steve Bruce.
Derby County continued their impressive start under Frank Lampard, and Brentford have surprised everyone with a front-foot start this season.
Here’s the Championship team of the week for matchday 6 – a list of players who stood out this weekend with their impactful performances:
Championship team of the week
Formation – 4-4-2
Manager of the week – Chris Wilder
Christian Walton (GK) (Wigan Athletic)
Walton was impressive in his side’s 1-0 victory over Rotherham. The goalkeeper made some vital saves to keep his deserved clean sheet on the day.
Pawel Olkowski (RB) (Bolton Wanderers)
Olkowski was one of the shining lights for Bolton in their 2-2 draw away to a 10-man Preston North End. Scored a goal and was very threatening with his forward runs.
Michael Morrison (CB) (Birmingham City)
Even though Birmingham would be a touch disappointed after drawing a blank against QPR, Morrison was impressive at the back for the Blues.
Jack O’Connell (CB) (Sheffield United)
Sheffield United thumped Aston Villa 4-1 to continue their good form. Defender Jack O’Connell scored and was impressive at the back for Chris Wilder’s men.
Jamal Lewis (LB) (Norwich City)
Lewis was put in an eye-catching performance against Ipswich Town in Norwich’s 1-1 draw away at the Portman Road.
Sammy Ameobi (RW) (Bolton Wanderers)
Ameobi was very good for Bolton, scoring a goal and being the main threat to the Preston defence all game.
Oliver Norwood (CM) (Sheffield United)
Scored a good goal against Aston Villa, and was very lively throughout the game. A key component in Sheffield United’s big win.
Adam Reach (CM) (Sheffield Wednesday)
Scored the goal in his team’s win over Reading. He was very impressive in attacking midfield, linking up play and exploiting the pockets of space.
Lucas Joao (LW) (Sheffield Wednesday)
Just like Reach, Joao also scored in Wednesday’s victory over Reading. He was a constant menace for the defenders to deal with.
Dwight Gayle (ST) (West Brom)
West Brom beat Stoke City 2-1 and Gayle scored a brace, one in each half to seal three points for the home team.
