Chelsea In Talks To Sign Colombian Winger But What About This Forgotten German?

The German has been on the fringes for most of the current campaign and with Cuadrado close to joining the Blues, could this spell the end of his career at Stamford Bridge?

According to latest transfer reports, Chelsea are in talks with Fiorentina to sign Juan Cuadrado. The Colombian has been tipped by many to go on to great things after dazzling displays in Serie A over the past few seasons. Few at the Bridge will bemoan his transfer to the club, with the obvious exception of Andre Schurrle, who is finding game time hard enough to come by without the addition of another quality player in his position.

The former Bayer Leverkusen star moved to Chelsea at the start of the 2013/14 season with a reputation as a hard working, top young talent. However after injuries hampered the early stages of his Premier League career, he has struggled to assert himself on English football. It would appear that Jose Mourinho isn’t his greatest fan either, placing him on the bench for the majority of the club’s games. The only regular opportunities handed to Schurrle have been in the cups or in fixtures when Mourinho has decided to rest some of his more preferred talent.

In the Portuguese’s defence, Schurrle has been poor when played and has struggled to replicate his Bundesliga form. If you aren’t a regular in the team then you must take your chance when played, he simply hasn’t.

The arrival of Cuadrado may be the final nail in his coffin. The Colombian has flourished in Italy and enjoyed an electric World Cup last summer, making him one of Europe’s hottest young prospects. He looks like a real top talent and yet more competition for a place in the Chelsea side is the last thing the Schurrle needs. What’s more, Mourinho has already indicated he may be willing to allow him to leave sometime in the near future. If all goes well and Chelsea do business with Fiorentina, that will surely be it for Andre Schurrle at the West-London club.
