Not Cahill – Here’s why Chelsea will regret selling this Premier League-winning ace so hastily

Chelsea opinion: Chelsea will regret selling David Luiz

Chelsea suffered a heavy defeat in their first game of the Premier League season against Manchester United.

They visited Old Trafford and after an encouraging first-half performance, they were swept aside by ruthless counter-attacks from the home side and this current Chelsea side’s lack of cutting edge and naivety in defence gave Frank Lampard a reality check.

One decision that the new Chelsea boss will come to regret is selling David Luiz to city rivals Arsenal. Kurt Zouma had a game to forget and it would be unfair to suggest that he was at fault for all the goals as senior player Cesar Azpilicueta was at fault for many of the goals as well.

Zouma and Christensen are good defenders but they could possibly use a senior figure to help them out.

Antonio Rudiger is currently nursing an injury and he was definitely a big miss but there are still doubts whether he can be leading figure that Luiz was in the heart of the defence and whether he has the personality of a David Luiz.

David Luiz

Luiz is one of the best passers from a centre-back position in the world not just in the Premier League. Chelsea showed this weekend that they’re going to prioritize building attacks from the back and losing Luiz will be a massive miss.

This is compounded by the transfer ban and while losing Luiz wouldn’t have been a problem if a good replacement was in place but there isn’t and that could end up being the difference between achieving Champions League qualification and not achieving it.

Chelsea have the UEFA Super Cup game against Liverpool on Wednesday and will follow that up with a difficult a game against Leicester City at Stamford Bridge. Leicester aren’t an easy opponent as they like to play on the front foot and it’ll be interesting to see how the two sides get along.

Conclusion

Chelsea can’t be as naïve as they were at Old Trafford and will have learnt a lot from the game.

They’ll make certain that they’ll continue playing the way they did and make a few adjustments but momentum is a big part of football and the Chelsea faithful will be desperate to get a result next week. Chelsea could’ve used someone like David Luiz right now.
