Crystal Palace signing this Champions League-winning star would solve a key problem for Roy Hodgson

Crystal Palace opinion: Should the Eagles make a move for Mignolet?

According to the Standard, Crystal Palace have entered the race for Liverpool star Simon Mignolet. The Champions League winner didn’t have the best season, playing second fiddle to Alisson Becker and that is not somewhere a player of his calibre would want to be permanently.

It’s why the Reds have allowed the Belgian to leave, with the report stating that they’ve targeted Alex McCarthy as a replacement. However, given the state of Crystal Palace’s goalkeeping situation, the Eagles need the Belgian more than any club in the Premier League right now.

To make things even worse for Crystal Palace, they are losing Julian Speroni, with the 40-year-old leaving the club once his contract officially expires.

This leaves them with just Hennessey and Guaita, which is not good news for a club looking to do well in the top-tier.

Things need to change and by adding someone as experienced and talented as Simon Mignolet, it will certainly help their luck. Simon Mignolet is as good as they come for a mid-table side aiming to punch above their weight.

Another experienced goalkeeper, Mignolet is not just younger than any Palace goalkeeper but he’s far more reliable. Not only that, the former Sunderland man has managed well over 200 games for Liverpool. This includes the two appearances this season.

But before that, the 31-year-old was a constant presence for the Reds after joining them in the summer of 2013. Furthermore, Mignolet has 245 appearances in the Premier League, playing for both Sunderland and Liverpool.

It shows just how talented he was once considered to be, playing football for both sides.

In fact, his decline at Anfield came half-way through last season, where Jurgen Klopp swapped the Belgian for Loris Karius. But the German struggled, failing to make an impact and was shipped off, while Mignolet remained at the club.

Now with him looking for more game-time, it’s high time Crystal Palace fight for an upgrade, which is exactly what Simon Mignolet will be. Not just that, he’ll give their defenders peace of mind as they know they have a reliable shot-stopper standing behind them when they make mistakes.

Conclusion

Crystal Palace need a few new additions to pump up their squad and while Simon Mignolet may not be that world-class superstar that fans are looking for, he’s an astute signing.

His experience and skill as a goalkeeper will be more than useful for a club like the Eagles, helping them punch well above their weight-class next season.
