Crystal Palace signing this Colombian hitman with €30m release clause would boost their attacking power

Crystal Palace Opinion – Why Palace should sign Rafael Santos Borre in the summer

According to a report in Spanish outlet Marca, Crystal Palace are interested in signing River Plate forward Rafael Santos Borre. The Colombian has a release clause of €30m in his contract, hence, it is clear what the Eagles need to fork out in order to get him.

It is suggested that Palace have made initial talks with the Argentine side, however, it is unclear as to how that meeting went.

In terms of current form, Santos Borre has been in good touch in front of the goal this season, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 21 appearances all competitions.

He scored three goals in two Club World Cup games, further enhancing his reputation of being the main man for River Plate when required. The 23-year-old was previously a part of the Atletico Madrid family. He came to Argentina in the summer of 2017.

Here’s why Crystal Palace should sign him in the summer transfer window:

Palace need quality up front

Predominantly a striker, Santos Borre can play as a supporting striker, or as a number 10, who can create chances for the front men. He possesses the pace to make runs in behind a defence and stretch them, simultaneously allowing space in between the lines for other attacking midfielders.

On the ball, the 23-year-old has good dribbling skills which he can use to go past defenders in tight spaces and create an opening towards the goal. The Colombian isn’t bad when it comes to having a pop at goal and testing the opposition goalkeeper at every given opportunity.

All in all, Santos Borre could be an ideal addition to the Crystal Palace front-line, that requires more quality in central attacking position.

As of now, they have Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew and Michy Batshuayi as the options for the centre-forward role.

While the latter is doing a good job, the other two haven’t been good enough. Furthermore, Batshuayi is a loanee from Chelsea.

Hence, getting the 23-year-old River Plate on board at Selhurst Park wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. Roy Hodgson can further improve the forward’s game and make him the main man at Palace.

Conclusion

Even though the release clause fee would be a bit heavy in the pockets of a club of Crystal Palace’s stature (with all due respect), Rafael Santos Borre has enough quality to justify that price tag and be a good addition to the Eagles’ squad.
