Crystal Palace signing this immensely talented 23-year-old would give Hodgson multiple options next season

Crystal Palace opinion: Should the Eagles go for Timothy Castagne?

According to the Express, Crystal Palace are interested in making a move for Serie A star Timothy Castagne. The 23-year-old, like the rest of Atalanta, enjoyed a rather fantastic season. It was one that saw him earn a place in Atalanta’s history with their first ever Champions League finish.

A rather sensational achievement, it’s one of the reasons why Crystal Palace may not even have a chance at winning the race for him. However, if they can and if the interest is reciprocated by the young Belgian full-back, then this is a move they have to make.

The Eagles have just the reliable and rather excellent Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but that could change. While their asking price of around £60million is a bit high, it’s still a fee that Manchester United might look to match or even come close to.

That is a ridiculous fact but it shows just how desperate the Red Devils are right now. But while Wan-Bissaka has shown incredible potential in those forty-odd games, it does give Crystal Palace a rather big headache, especially if they lose him.

Barring the 21-year-old, the Eagles just have Joel Ward and Martin Kelly, who are both 29. Both players have struggled to find a way past Wan-Bissaka this season and on the rare occasion that they did, they struggled to make the most out of it.

Things need to change and by bringing in Timothy Castagne, that is exactly what will happen at the club. The 23-year-old may have shot to prominence recently but he has been consistently putting in the work for Atalanta and KRC Genk.

It’s one of the reasons why the fans have fallen in love, with the 23-year-old going above and beyond for the Serie A side.

He combines that with his athleticism, tactical awareness both offensively and defensively, and more or less epitomizes an old-school full-back. He’s a physical presence on the field and is more than solid defensively, which has often seen him play on either side.

For a full-back, however, Castagne is rather tall and uses that effectively, winning his fair share of aerial duels. That is something Wan-Bissaka has struggled with, and something extra that Timothy Castagne will add.

Conclusion

Crystal Palace need to start looking forward and replacing Aaron Wan-Bissaka would be a big part of that plan. The 21-year-old is rather talented and with time, he will eventually move to a bigger and better side.

That’s where Timothy Castagne comes into play and even if Wan-Bissaka stays, Castagne can play as a left-back as well.
