Despite a £30.8m release clause, Man United would be wise to dodge this Greek bullet in the summer

Manchester United opinion: The Red Devils shouldn’t sign Kostas Manolas

ESPN (h/t Calciomercato) have reported that Manchester United are looking to enter the race for AS Roma star Kostas Manolas.

The 27-year-old has struggled this season along with the rest of the Stadio Olimpico as Roma have slumped out of the Champions League and look out of place in the Italian top tier.ESPN has further added that if the club do not finish in a Champions League spot, the centre-back will look to leave the club.

To make things even worse, Manolas has only a £30.8m release clause (Calciomercato), which makes him a great option for Manchester United. However, despite the Greek international’s abilities, it’s a move that the Red Devils shouldn’t look to make.

While Manolas is arguably one of the best defenders in the world, the Greek centre-back has regressed in recent years, with injuries and other issues playing a part. However, why Manchester United shouldn’t sign is simply because the Red Devils have an army of centre-backs at their disposal.

Furthermore, Phil Jones has just signed a new deal which keeps him at the club until 2023 (Telegraph). Though the deal is a surprise, Jones has proven to be a great player under Solskjaer.

He struggled to make an impact in Mourinho’s final six months with the club. Yet, like most of Manchester United, Solskjaer’s appointment has turned things around for everyone.

Furthermore, a player like Manolas will want a first-team berth if he does make the move, and he does warrant it.

That will disrupt the club and the pecking order at Manchester United. At the moment, both Lindelof and Smalling are first-choices, with Jones and Bailly used as a second choice and Rojo a versatile back-up.

Conclusion

There is no doubting how good Kostas Manolas is as a player, but the question for Manchester United to answer is if they really need him. With David De Gea as their goalkeeper plus Smalling and Lindelof flourishing together, that’s as good as it gets.

Adding someone new will prove to disrupt the energy between the trio and that might affect Manchester United in the long-term.
