Despite relegation, Huddersfield’s move for 23-year-old Belgian could be the bright spot next season – agreed?

Huddersfield Town opinion: Signing Isaac Mbenza permanently is the right move

For Huddersfield Town it’s over but the Terriers refused to give up, going out of the Premier League with a bang. They’ve claimed Manchester United as their biggest scalp this season, stopping the Red Devils from qualifying for the Champions League after a 1-1 draw.

The game and the statistics were heavily dominated by the away side but the scoreline wasn’t. That proved a lot about the club and it’s sad that this fighting spirit did not come much earlier in the season.

Things could have been a lot more different if it did, but at the same time, the Terriers have a lot of underlying problems that they need to change.

Their inability to score goals has hurt them very badly, with the club scoring just 21 goals. To put it into context, Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot has more and Ryan Fraser has contributed to as many goals this season.

It shows where and why the club have suffered, which is why signing Isaac Mbenza permanently made a lot of sense. The Examiner Live has reported that the 23-year-old will join the club permanently from next season.

Currently on loan from Montpellier, the Belgian international has had a mixed season so far, with various injuries to his hamstring affecting his chances. It’s why he has played only 21% of the available minutes, despite making just over 20 appearances for the club.

However, given their sheer lack of players out wide, someone like Mbenza makes a lot of sense. Manager Jan Siewart has been forced to use the likes of Juninho Bacuna, Alex Pritchard and even Abdelhamid Sabiri out wide.

That has affected the style of play, as all the aforementioned players are midfielders and thus lack the speed and agility to make it out wide. Isaac Mbenza is the exact opposite and has shown that whenever given the chance.

Whether it’s off the substitute bench or even as a starter, the 23-year-old has been a speedy presence and for a club going down that’s a big factor in their survival. While the Championship is a tough league to play in, pace and athleticism are always a handy tool to have.

Isaac Mbenza provides that and with time, the 23-year-old should become a big part of the team.

Conclusion

Huddersfield Town have had a jolly time in the Premier League but when reality hit, it hit them very very hard.

Their downfall however, has been very graceful and filled with a fighting spirit that fans wished that the club had showed earlier. But if they continue that into the Championship, then players like Isaac Mbenza will only help push them further forward.
