Despite scoring 35 goals in 13 games, Rangers must sign this Newcastle star to boost title hopes – opinion

Why Rangers should sign Newcastle star Joselu in January

Rangers have made a terrific start to the season under new manager Steven Gerrard. They are second in the Scottish league table, just two points behind the leaders and defending champions Celtic.

The Gers look an attractive team this season, scoring goals for fun and beating teams with wide margins. It shows that they mean business this time around, and the Hoops won’t find an easy path towards league success this year.

Even though they have scored 35 goals in 13 league games at a rate of almost three goals a game, Rangers do require attacking reinforcements once the January transfer window opens. Alfredo Morelos has been in terrific touch, netting 8 goals in 13 appearances, but Kyle Lafferty has scored only three goals in nine appearances thus far.

Hence, it is imperative from the club’s viewpoint that they sign another striker in the winter market and add more firepower to the front line. At the end of the day, it’s goals that win games and the Gers need to score goals on a regular basis and must have a strong bench to call upon whenever necessary.

Steven Gerrard’s men should sign Joselu from Premier League club Newcastle United in the winter window. Here’s why:

Joselu’s physical presence could come in handy

Joselu started few games early on this season and scored three goals. However, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has preferred to start with Salomon Rondon, hence, the former is left warming the bench more often than not. It means the Spaniard would be looking for a move elsewhere to play more games and be an effective striker.

The 28-year-old is now an experienced striker in the Premier League and wouldn’t take much time to adapt to the intensity of the Scottish League. Furthermore, his physicality and aerial prowess could come in handy when the Gers are chasing the game and they need a presence up top from set-pieces and long balls.

As per the report, Rangers were interested in signing Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke as a backup in the squad. However, a journalist named Jim White tweeted that the Reds won’t let go of their young striker.

Hence, if the Gers are not getting Solanke, the second best option would be to sign Joselu on a permanent deal.
