Enough is enough – Why it is time for Wolverhampton Wanderers to offload this summer signing

Last summer, Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers went on quite a bit of a spending spree. The club heavily invested in procuring new talent to boost their hopes of top-flight qualification and so far, most of the players they brought in have yielded positive results.

In fact, if they continue putting up solid performances, nothing can stand between them and the top-flight. However, there has been one player who came in with the rest of the new faces but is yet to make a single appearance.

Phil Ofosu-Ayeh joined Wolves on a three-year deal in June 2017. He had put in some promising displays for his former club Eintracht Braunschweig and the defender became Nuno Espirito Santo’s second signing as the new manager.

Having played for clubs like SV Wilhelmshaven, MSV Duisburg and VFR Aalen prior to this, he seemed like a decent new addition but since then, injuries have prevented him from making a mark at Molineux. Although he was expected to make his debut this year, he is yet to reach total fitness.

At a time when Wolves are giving everything they have to ensure they win the Championship title and move into the Premier League, it is safe to say that finishing on top is possibly the easiest thing they will have to do.

The real challenge will begin next season when Santo and his men are faced with sides in the top-flight. To play in the Premier League is certainly no easy feat and Wolves will have to be at their absolute best with their most reliable players to ensure they can stand strong.

Phil Ofosu-Ayeh

In such a situation, it makes no sense to hold onto Ofosu-Ayeh, who has not even gotten a taste of Championship football so far.

The 26-year-old might have potential but there is still no clarity as to when he will return and it is close to being almost a year since he joined the club. Before the season comes to an end, it will be imperative for him to gain some action at least but if he fails to do so, it might be best for Wolves to look at other options and offload him this summer.

Ofosu-Ayeh is a right-back and Wolves currently have Matt Doherty in that position and he has been absolutely outstanding this season. Be it playing as a right-back or a right wing-back, Doherty has excelled in both these positions.

However, they will need cover for him in the upcoming transfer window and given the circumstances, Ofosu-Ayeh certainly cannot act as a backup. Hence, it might be in the club’s best interests to look elsewhere and let him leave in the upcoming transfer window.
