An incredibly exciting set of midweek fixtures took place in the Premier League which had a huge role to play in the destiny of the title.. Everyone thought that the impetus to charge to the top of the league table had gone over to Arsenal and Tottenham after Leicester’s draw but both the London sides missed out with unexpected losses.
Another unexpected loss was heaped on Manuel Pellegrini when his Capital One Cup winning Manchester City side were humbled 3-0 by Liverpool. The loss greatly puts pressure on the side as they look to qualify for the Champions League and with Manchester United winning 1-0 against Watford, it seems it is a straight shootout between the two Manchester clubs for a top four finish.
There were a lot of great performances and we provide the team of the midweek round of fixtures.
Jack Butland
While Joe Hart had a nightmare at Liverpool, Jack Butland continued his great form for Stoke City as he kept a clean sheet and got three points for his side.
Jon Flanagan
Flanagan returned to the league side after more than a year out and did extremely well to shut out Raheem Sterling in a great display for the Reds.
Dejan Lovren
Another player who had a great outing for Liverpool was Dejan Lovren who dealt with Sergio Aguero brilliantly and kept him quiet throughout the game.
Steve Cook
Bournemouth were back to winning ways and Steve Cook was incredible in defence for the side as they picked up three crucial points.
Ramiro Funes Mori
The Everton defender might not have had the most consistent season but he did score a goal for the Toffees as they too picked up three points.
Kenedy
Kenedy was played as a left-back for Chelsea and scored the fastest goal of this season for the Blues as they beat Norwich and continued their great revival under Guus Hiddink.
James Milner
Playing against his old club didn’t faze James Milner as he put in a great performance with a goal to lift Liverpool into the top eight of the league.
Adam Lallana
Liverpool were on fire and no one epitomised that more than Adam Lallana who was brilliant for the Reds and opened the scoring for the Merseyside club.
Michail Antonio
The West Ham attacker got the only goal of the game and dented Spurs’ chances of winning the league, he was great all game for the Hammers and deserves to be in the team of the week.
Roberto Firmino
Firmino has been on fire ever since Jurgen Klopp took over and scored another great goal for Liverpool and makes it into the team.
Diego Costa
Costa continues his fine form under Hiddink as he scored, even though he was offside, but he is the striker in form.
