“Europa League Ronaldo”: Some Chelsea fans full of praise for star man after 5-0 drubbing of Dynamo Kyiv + Match report

Dynamo Kyiv vs Chelsea report: Chelsea match report

Chelsea beat Dynamo Kyiv 5-0 in the away leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie to progress to the quarterfinals. After a 3-0 scoreline in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea won by an 8-goal margin on aggregate.

The Blues began this game very much in the driving seat with Kyiv needing to score at least 3 to have any chance of progressing from this difficult tie against one of England’s biggest clubs. The Blues pushed on to find the opener and it came in the 5th minute.

A Chelsea corner was taken from the right by Brazilian winger Willian. The ball in was met at the near post by Marcos Alonso whose flick found Olivier Giroud 6 yards away from goal. The French World Cup winner made no mistake and tucked it in to make it 4-0 on aggregate and effectively put the tie past Kyiv.

The second goal didn’t take very long to come either and it was slowly starting to look like Chelsea were going to breeze through what was a fairly competitive tie on paper. It took them 27 minutes after the opener to score the second and it was Giroud on the spot again.

A quick Chelsea break saw Alonso in space on the left flank. He curled a brilliant ball into the box for Giroud to run into and the Frenchman calmly slotted past the helpless goalkeeper to make it 2-0 on the night.

Chelsea’s relentless attacking play continued even after this as it looked like they were out to send a message to the other teams in the competition. The third goal didn’t come as too much of a surprise and Marcos Alonso, who was excellent all half down the left, was the scorer.

Callum Hudson-Odoi played a slick one-two with Giroud down the right and the youngster received the return after showing blistering pace and then had the composure to put it on a plate for Alonso, who made no mistake and scored Chelsea’s third.

After half-time, Kyiv had a few short spells of decent possession where they did try and push the Chelsea defence but with the experience of Antonio Rudiger in there, that task was easier said than done.

Chelsea further increased their lead 14 minutes into the second half and it came from another corner.

Willian’s corner was met at the near post by a completely free Giroud, who took the chance with great aplomb to score his third goal of the night and his 9th goal in 9 appearances in the Europa League this season.

Although the game was done and dusted at this stage, Chelsea’s attack was not stopping and it was becoming clear that the Kyiv defence was slowly starting to switch off. Young prodigy Callum Hudson-Odoi stepped up to scored Chelsea’s 5th goal in the 78th minute.

Giroud’s smart ball from the midfield put Hudson-Odoi clean through on goal and despite pressure from the defender, the youngster had the composure to slot it past the keeper to make it 5-0 on the night after which Chelsea comfortably saw out the victory and moved on to the quarterfinals with an 8-0 aggregate win.
