Everton signing this 14-goal French sensation would get Silva a gem to work with for the future – opinion

Everton opinion: Silva should sign Alexis Claude-Maurice

According to reports in Football.London, Everton are interested in signing French winger Alexis Claude-Maurice from Ligue 2 outfit Lorient this summer. Lorient is where Matteo Guendouzi is from and the club are known to produce young and raw talent.

Maurice bagged 14 goals last term along with four assists and the 21-year-old forward is interesting Premier League rivals Arsenal and West Ham according to the report. The Hammers are said to be leading the chase after opening the bidding at £10m this week.

The Frenchman had a breakthrough season and it’s no surprise that clubs are interested. He primarily plays on the left wing or in a deeper left-midfield role.

He likes to cut inside and take up the half spaces between the full-back and the centre-back, and make passes or take shots. He is a very capable dribbler, using his speed and skill to beat opposition full-backs.

Everton have a serious lack of goals in their team, with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison taking up most of the goalscoring burden within the team. Bernard has had a decent season but has never been a prolific player.

Theo Walcott has lost a yard of pace and had an abject season due to it. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done admirably, scoring 6 goals, but is a squad player at best. Cenk Tosun scored 2 and can now be classified as a flop in his 18 months at Goodison Park.

Marco Silva was hired by the Toffees’ hierarchy with the hope that he could elevate the club to a higher standard in the coming years, constantly qualifying for European competitions and fighting for silverware.

Everton did get very close to achieving it, having made it to 8th place but their poor form mid-season saw them lose a lot of ground on the likes of Wolves.

It’s important that Silva is allowed to work with players who are talented and the Portuguese has a great record of developing some of the finest players in the Premier League today, including Richarlison, Andy Robertson and Harry Maguire.

There is no doubt that with a better squad, Silva can make inroads into the top-6 and maybe even top-4 in a few years time.

Conclusion

Silva would be a great manager for Maurice to continue his development under and the Frenchman will get a move that befits his talent.
