Everton signing this top-class 20-year-old for £36m would be a big statement of intent from Marco Silva

Everton Opinion: Why Rafael Leao would be a good fit for the Toffees

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Everton are interested in signing Lille starlet Rafael Leao as they prepare to launch a £36million bid.

Rafael Leao, 20, is a top-class talent with lots of potential. The Portugal youth international recently showcased his talent at the Under-20 World Cup, scoring once in three games as his country crashed out at the group stage.

He is clearly a man in demand after bagging eight goals in Ligue 1 last term despite not being a regular starter.

The young forward has caught the attention of a number of clubs, including Everton, who have been tracking Leao for some time and it seems they are ready to make a move for the Portuguese attacker.

The Toffees had a great end to last season, but are looking to kick on and add more firepower to their attack ahead of the new campaign. Cenk Tosun endured a disappointing 2018/19 and while Dominic Calvert-Lewin impressed in patches, Marco Silva would do a world of good by bringing in a prolific, young goalscorer.

Everton have already made a few signings so far in the transfer window, so seeing them splash even more cash on such an exciting player like Leao would really show their intentions to break into the top six next term.

Leao would be a hugely exciting addition for the Merseyside outfit, possessing great pace and technical ability as well as strength, meaning he has the potential to become an all-round centre-forward.

The Portuguese is not just a fine dribbler but he also happens to be a speedy, technically-gifted and powerful forward with a splendid eye for goal.

He keeps the ability to race past his opponent in a blink of an eye and score a goal, that’s how quick and decisive he is in the final third. The ex-Sporting Lisbon man can hold the ball as well as make intelligent runs behind the opposition backline and finish off moves.

With the creative minds of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bernard and Richarlison in and around the final third, Leao would potentially thrive and score more goals under Silva at Everton.

Verdict

If Everton can beat a number of clubs across Europe to the Portuguese starlet, that would be a statement of intent. And if Leao fulfils his potential, he could become a star at Goodison Park.
