Food for thought: Is Man United’s £600,000-a-week star going down the Di Maria route at Old Trafford?

Is Alexis Sanchez going down the Angel Di Maria role at Manchester United?

Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez have both led very similar paths in life and at Manchester United. Di Maria joined the club amidst similar fanfare and expectations but he ended up crumbling under pressure and eventually sealed a move to join French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

A similar situation appears to be brewing with Sanchez right now. As per a report from Daily Mail, the £600,00-a-week Chilean star seems to be reconsidering his decision and looks rather isolated.

The whole decision to join United seemed rather sloppy, in my opinion. To be absolutely honest, United did not need a player like him and especially not with the inflated wages that he was demanding. It is unfair to the other players as well.

There are certain players who have been with the club longer and have made more significant contributions and yet Sanchez is going home with all the money. Had his performances on the field matched up to his billing, there would be no problem but sadly, that is not the case.

Alexis Sanchez

It is hard to lay a finger on what exactly is going wrong with Sanchez but it is noteworthy that even Radamel Falcao endured a similar fate at Old Trafford. He arrived at the club as an internationally-acclaimed footballer but he left as a failed star. Luckily for Di Maria, he managed to seal a move to PSG and he seems to be doing well there. However, Sanchez must do everything he can to avoid going down the same road with United.

To be fair, Sanchez’s natural style of football seems more suited for clubs like Arsenal and Manchester City. The move to join United was quite clearly just for the money but now that he is here, the player must make something out of it. One might argue that it is too soon to judge him but the South American star is an out-and-out statistics man and it does not look good for him right now, with a solitary goal in his last 10 games.

That said, there is absolutely no denying Sanchez’s talent. He can prove to be the ultimate game-changer even in the most trying situations and a player like him can undoubtedly be an asset to any team. However, United already had far too many options for the wide role and now with Sanchez in the mix, it seems to have created a discord of sorts.

As this season comes to an end, United seem set to clinch the runners-up spot but next season, the club and Sanchez will face a greater test and that is when we will get to see the true reality of the situation.
