Food for thought: Should Man United allow their £31m young star leave Old Trafford?

Should Manchester United sell Victor Lindelof?

Having signed only last summer, Manchester United‘s Victor Lindelof could be on his way out of the club already. French outfit Lyon have had a bid rejected for the Swedish defender, who struggled to get game time at Old Trafford after a horrible start.

It is rumoured that the Manchester United board is willing to let go of their £31m signing and a better offer from Lyon could see them bag the player. Lindelof is yet to join the Manchester United camp for the pre-season after reaching the quarterfinals of the World Cup with Sweden.

So, should Manchester United let Lindelof leave for Lyon?

Why they should

Lindelof costed a significant amount of money and it was expected that he could reach the mighty levels of Vidic and Ferdinand. However, what followed was the exact opposite as Lindelof looked lost in the pre-season. There were a number of horror shows by the young Swedish defender.

Ultimately, Lindelof had to settle for a place on the bench and he couldn’t make his presence felt. If Manchester United can land a proven centre-back like Alderweireld by selling Lindelof, they should do that as it would strengthen the team.

If Lyon come up with a good offer which helps Manchester United cover their losses, the Red Devils shouldn’t ponder too much.

Why they shouldn’t

Although Lindelof was nowhere near impressive in his first season with Manchester United, he could still come good as he is young and promising. The defender should be given the benefit of doubt, especially when he is coming off a good world cup campaign with Sweden where they reached quarterfinals of the tournament.

Another good thing about Lindelof is that he is a versatile player who is good with the ball at his feet and can play as a right-back or a defensive midfielder when needed.

At an age of 24, Lindelof is still very young and the potential he has promised so far in his career could be a big reason for United to not let him go. There have been instances where promising players who left Mourinho have gone onto become superstars of the game.

Verdict

If Lyon come up with a significant offer, the club should sell the player who looks unsettled at the Old Trafford so far. However, they must sign a massive upgrade to not be affected by his departure.
