Food for thought – Tottenham must make an audacious swoop to sign this £100m-rated superstar in January

Why Spurs must make an audacious January swoop for Milinkovic-Savic

According to a report from the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Lazio ace Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Tottenham Hotspur were among a few Premier League clubs to have sent scouts to watch Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in action against Genoa last month. Lazio went on to win the game 4-1 with the 23-year-old being among the goals.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who is estimated to be valued at £100million, has garnered a lot of interest from Europe’s elite clubs due to his dazzling displays in the Serie A. However, Lazio have successfully managed to tie him down to a mega-money deal (h/t The Sun).

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Tottenham did not sign new players in the summer transfer window but manager Mauricio Pochettino should look to bolster the squad once the window reopens. In fact, Tottenham’s interest in Milinkovic-Savic does not come as a surprise and he could be an ideal replacement for the struggling Mousa Dembele.

Dembele, 31, has not been at his best so far this season and has lacked composure on the ball. The Belgian seems fatigued and is not capable of completing 90 minutes week in and week out for Spurs.

Furthermore, the midfielder is in the final year of his contract and with no agreement in place between player and club, Spurs could lose one of their most important players for nothing. Losing the Belgian for free would be a massive blow for the north Londoners as the 31-year-old has developed into a key member of Pochettino’s squad.

At 31, there is not much football left in Dembele and he isn’t going to get any better. Keeping that in mind, Spurs must sign someone who can provide energy in the central midfield and also essay the deep-lying playmaker’s role. To that end, Milinkovic-Savic seems like the ideal player for Spurs.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Milinkovic-Savic is technically gifted and physically imposing at the same time, making him an all-action midfielder. The Serbian can dictate the tempo with his exquisite passing abilities and boasts of a good understanding of the game. He is also adept at breaking the opponents’ play and can be utilized either as a central midfielder or as a sweeper for the back four.

Milinkovic-Savic’s combination of pace, power, strength, vision and technique make him a special player. Furthermore, he is also capable of producing moments of brilliance and is always a threat in the final third.

Securing the 23-year-old’s services would be a difficult task for Spurs but there is no doubt that he would provide experience and power in the middle of the park. Irrespective of what happens with Dembele, Pochettino should strengthen his midfield options in January by breaking the bank for the Serbian powerhouse.
