Food For Thought – Why Signing This Former Manchester United Outcast Would Be A Great Move For Tottenham

Tottenham transfer news on Wilfried Zaha

Tottenham had a successful last season under Mauricio Pochettino who almost turned them into title contenders in barely two seasons at the helm. This time around, though, the story has been different as Tottenham have often struggled for consistency. They had an unbeaten start for quite a long time, but that run also included several draws in which Spurs’ attack looked tooth-less and out of ideas.

The injuries sustained by Erik Lamela and Harry Kane certainly didn’t do Tottenham any favours as they needlessly dropped points and ruined the good early start to their campaign. Vincent Janssen too hasn’t covered himself in glory so far.  Kane has returned from injury and restored some kind of parity to Spurs’ season as they were on the verge of falling with several uninspiring performances.

All this should be a cause for concern for Mauricio Pochettino and he should look to resolve his side’s deficiencies in the January transfer window. So far, Spurs have been linked with moves for Ross Barkley and Wilfried Zaha. Barkley has been overlooked by current Everton manager Ronald Koeman, whereas Wilfried Zaha has been the only shining light in Crystal Palace’s season so far.

Ever since that move to Manchester United, Wilfried Zaha has been an enigma of sorts. Having impressed at Crystal Palace largely, he was lucky to be honoured as Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing at the club. But he was unlucky that the legendary coach decided to hang up his managerial jacket at the end of that season. Thus leaving Zaha with the task of impressing a new coach all over again.

Crystal Palace players celebrate a goal

Zaha is currently in his third season as a Premier League regular with Crystal Palace and has done enough to warrant interest from a club like Tottenham. The North London’s club’s failures in the summer transfer window have been exposed and they are looking to rectify those errors by strengthening their squad in the January transfer window. Moussa Sissoko has been fairly invisible so far and Zaha could be coming in to replace the Frenchman.

Zaha’s style of play is certain to suit Tottenham as he is an out and out winger that likes to get to the byline and get crosses in. So far this season, he has been doing exactly that and provided excellent service to new Crystal Palace signing Christian Benteke, who has benefitted tremendously from the presence of Wilfried Zaha on the right-hand side of Crystal Palace’s wide line.

He could certainly do the same at Tottenham, where summer signing George Kevin N’kodou has taken too much time to get used to the Premier League. The arrival from Marseille has taken a similar path to the man he replaced at the club, Clinton N’jie.  This will obviously worry Pochettino and he could see Zaha as the perfect player to provide excellent service for the likes of Harry Kane, Vincent Janssen and co.

Wilfried Zaha’s arrival at Tottenham could also mean that Moussa Sissoko is pushed into a central midfield role, where he flourished for France in the Euro 2016. At the moment, Spurs are lacking decent options off the bench and strengthening the squad with the signings of Zaha and a few others could turn them into genuine contenders for Champions League football again. It’s a move that will best suit all parties and it is definitely bound to help Wilfried Zaha, who could go onto big things if makes the move to White Hart Lane.
