Forget Dummett and Kenedy – Newcastle United would bag a massive coup by signing this out-of-favour 28-year-old on loan

Why Newcastle United must sign Marvin Zeegelaar on loan in January

Newcastle United are in a poor position in the Premier League at the moment as they are increasingly finding it difficult to get past their opponents. If things don’t take a positive turn in the second half of the season, they could find themselves embroiled in a relegation battle.

A number of key players have underperformed for Newcastle this season, leaving Rafael Benitez with no chance but to keep trusting them. With his side struggling in the Premier League, Benitez could be thinking about reinforcements in January, but it seems unlikely that he will be given many funds to spend.

With Mike Ashley in the process of selling the club, it is expected that Newcastle’s transfer budget could be limited once again. That could see Benitez use the loan market once again, as he aims to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.

Marvin Zeegelaar

The Magpies’ defence has been all over the place this season. At this moment, signing a defender is a no-brainer for Newcastle and Benitez should make a move for Watford’s Marvin Zeegelaar in January.

Marvin Zeegelaar, 28, made 12 appearances for Watford in his debut Premier League season but has failed to play a single game so far this season. The Dutch defender has been frozen out of the first team, with Javi Gracia preferring the likes of Jose Holebas and Adam Masina ahead of him this term.

With his situation unlikely to change going forward, a loan move away from Watford would be best suited for both the club and Marvin Zeegelaar. And a move to Newcastle would give the 28-year-old an opportunity to play regularly and revive his career.

Marvin Zeegelaar

Marvin Zeegelaar’s versatility could come handy for Newcastle as Benitez would be able to use him at left-back, left wing-back or on the left wing.

The Dutchman would bring robustness to the Newcastle backline with his physicality and power, whilst also add some flair going forward. A good tackler, the former Sporting Lisbon man has a sweet left-foot that is capable of producing excellent crosses and powerful shots from distance.

With Paul Dummett in and out of the team and Kenedy failing to make his presence count, a move for the versatile Zeegelaar makes sense for the Magpies. Avoiding relegation is a top priority for Rafa Benitez and he would do a world of good by signing the Dutch defender on loan from Watford next month.
